The Gates Foundation challenged eight consortia worldwide to reinvent the toilet. The new toilet for developing countries has to be completely off the grid, not connected to sewerage systems, energy grid or water pipes. Therefore, it has to close the loops and clean its own water, produce its own energy etc.
